For the Umatuna Si Yu’os
There are many myths about modern men, including the book entitled Real Men Don’t Eat Quiche. Stereotypical characteristics of real men might include a few of these:
- Men should not display emotions or any signs of weakness.
- We should be self-made men, rugged individuals who pull ourselves up by the boot straps, not needing anyone else.
Sound familiar? The problem is that these traits do not serve us well in all settings. They certainly do not work in the context of marriage nor in parenting.
Men often struggle between the macho identity and the warm, tender, and compassionate identity. More men might step up to the leadership roles if they had more self-confidence about their own value and responsibilities.
God has a lot to say about these identity issues. Holy Scripture has many guidelines. Catholic Men’s Conferences are safe, relaxful settings for having fruitful conversations about issues men struggle with, and to having challenging talks on these issues.
Join us Saturday, Jan. 20 at the Dulce Nombre de Maria Cathedral Basilica in Hagåtña for Guam’s 14th Catholic Men’s Conference. For more information call me, Pat Wolff at 649-7502 or email Agana Cathedral rector, Paul Gofigan at email@example.com
