Part VIII in a Series

As part of expressing gratitude to the religious communities serving in our island, the Archdiocese of Agana’s Golden Jubilee Committee has been presenting brief profiles of the men and women serving in such communities weekly in our Catholic newspaper.

Their vocation as a religious woman or man is a gift from God continually inspired by the Holy Spirit and guided by Jesus in service to God and his People. For the past two months, we’ve been happy to share information these servants of Christ provided in informational forms asking them three basic questions. Their responses reflect another tangible way of sharing the meaning of their life with the People of God.

Most Rev. Anthony Sablan Apuron, OFM Cap. D.D., Metropolitan Archbishop of Agana

Note: Archbishop Anthony was ordained a priest (Capuchin Friar) on Aug. 26, 1972. He was ordained Titular Bishop of Muzuca on Feb. 19, 1984 and installed as Metropolitan Archbishop on May 11, 1986.

A NUN – when my brother brought me to the church when I was a little girl, I saw a nun and I said I like to be like that…

2. What motivates you to persevere in your vocation?
The passages:

“You did not choose me; I have chosen you.”

“Come to me all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will refresh you and give you peace of mind.”

“Though I walk in the valley of darkness, I fear no evil, for you are with me.”

1. What inspired you to choose the vocation you are in today?

Before I entered in the nunnery, something was lacking in my life. It was quite unexplainable. I am convinced that God called me.

2. What motivates you to persevere in your vocation?
God’s unconditional love and mercy. My day-to-day encounter with God in the Eucharist and in my prayer. By sharing God’s light to all the people in need.

Sister Milagros R. Emralino, OP, Religious Missionaries of Saint Dominic.

1. What inspired you to choose the vocation you are in today?
The love of God from childhood inspires me to choose this religious vocation. I know I had the seed of my vocation when I was still young. It was nurtured through studying in a Catholic school under the Franciscan Missionaries of Mary (FMM) from high school until graduation. I was exposed to Catholic atmosphere, daily Masses, Communion, catechist, Legion of Mary, and priests. Plus the guidance of a spiritual father who took us (five of us) as his spiritual children.

2. What motivates you to persevere in y our vocation?
The continuous love of God.

When temptations come, recourse to prayer.

The guidance of a spiritual director, his advice, his letters up to my entrance to the convent. Every now and then a talk was given to me in the confessional, in the seminary parlor or through his long letters. This took years even up to the convent. Why Dominican and not Franciscan? God’s ways are not our ways.

Prayer for perseverance of my chosen vocation.
