Prayer to Jesus: “The prayer of the Church venerates and honors the Heart of Jesus just as it invokes his most holy name. It adores the incarnate Word and his Heart which, out of love for men, he allowed to be peirced by our sins” (CCC 2669).

In my younger years, I learned about the beautiful tradition of the Roman Catholic Church as it relates to Catholic devotions. There are a multitude of Catholic devotions to choose from such as the veneration of the saints, Blessed Sacrament Chapel eucharistic adoration, the wearing of the scapular, and novenas.

As a young girl growing up, I recall taking part in two family devotions with my parents and siblings. One was the devotion of making home to home vists (almost weekly) honoring Our Lady of Fatima in various people’s homes by faithfully and devoutly praying the rosary with many other Catholics sharing in the same devotion. The other devotion was attending the Mass and adoration to the Sacred Heart of Jesus every first Friday of the month.

My parents, Pedro Leon Guerrero Santos (deceased) and Rosario San Nicolas Santos through their encouragement and example helped not only my siblings and me, but also many parishioners of Nuestra Senora de la Paz Y Buen Viaje (Our Lady of Peace and Safe Journey) of Chalan Pago discover a deeper love for Jesus through devotion and veneration to his Most Sacred Heart. According to my mother, Rosario, through the leadership and guidance from my father, Pedro, the parishioners worked with the parish priest in the latter years of the 1980s to institute as a second patron for the parish – the Sacred Heart of Jesus. A tradition the parishioners have carried out for 30 years.

My mom recalls how my father was able to see such devotion come to fruition in 1989, when the parish celebrated its first parish fiesta for the Sacred Heart of Jesus. I find this to be a bittersweet memory because not long after the institution of the parish’s second celebration of the Feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus as the second patron through an annual tradition of the festal Mass, procession, and “na taotao tumano”; my father, Pedro Leon Guerrero, died from a battle with cancer on Sept. 25, 1990.

This devotion and veneration to the Sacred Heart of Jesus touches deep in my heart as it represents for me a love for my family that is connected through the great love Christ shared for us through his death and resurrection. Furthermore, this particular year will be even more meaningful for my mom and my family because this year’s festal celebration falls on June 28th, the date of my father’s birth. Additionally, being that this festal celebration has a special place not only in my heart, but also in the hearts of my mother and siblings, for nearly three decades, a donation of flowers for the festal Mass has been a special family tradition.

This coming Friday, June 28, 2019, the Chalan Pago parishioners of Nuestra Senor de La Paz Y Buen Viaje will continue its devotional celebration of the Feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, 30 years from its first start. The daily novena devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus began this past Thursday, June 20, and will end this coming Friday.

In the upcoming week, Father Carlos “Karl” S. Vila, parochial administrator of Nuestra Senor de La Paz Y Buen Viaje Catholic Church, along with faithful parishioners will be gearing up for the annual patronal fiesta for the Sacred Heart of Jesus and are extending an invitation to the people to join them during the remaining weekday novenas starting at 5:15 p.m. which will culminate on Friday, June 28, 2019.

Please mark your calendar and join the celebration this Friday, June 28, 2019, the final novena will be at 5:15 p.m. and will be followed by the festal Mass at 6 p.m. The main celebrant for the Mass will be Father Jeffrey San Nicolas, Vicar General of the archdiocese, with Father Karl and other guest priests as concelebrants.  Following the Mass will be a procession in honor of the Sacred Heart of Jesus that will be followed with a customary “na taotao tumano,” hosted through the generosity of the parishioners, in the Parish Social Hall.
