The Crusade to Educate

St. Francis School to host annual 5K

For over 60 years, St. Francis School in Yona has been engrained into the hearts and spirits of the people of Guam. Countless have taught and volunteered there.  Hundreds are alumni. Thousands were students. And the entire island was shaken in the wake of the school being victimized on 42 different occasions last year. Despite the growth and its ability to adapt to the changing times, some things at St. Francis School never change… the love of its school community, the support of its parents, the hard work of its employees, and the down-to-earth spirit of its students.  Sixty years is a lot of time for change.  But St. Francis School continues to be resilient in its efforts to ‘fight for what’s right.’

In its efforts to continue in the school’s mission, then annual St. Francis School 5K Run/Walk, “Crusade to Educate”, will take place on Saturday, May 19, 2012.  This run/walk will mark its third year, and will be held on a different route.  In its first year, the ‘Crusade to Educate’ took place at the Joseph Flores (Ypao) Beach Park.  Last year, hundreds gathered at the Guam Premier Outlets (GPO) for the event.  This year’s run, however, will take place on the school grounds and in the village of Yona, mainly occurring on the Route 4 strip commonly known as “Chalan Canton Tasi.”  The organizing committee is hopeful that the run will have all participants see the school they are supporting.

School teams, individuals, southern residents, and school families, friends, and supporters are welcomed to register at St. Francis School in Yona, or at Hornet Sporting Goods in Tamuning.  Registration and selling of numbers will formally open during the first week of May.  Proceeds from this year’s event will go towards various educational materials.  In addition, the School’s Leadership Team unveiled plans for the repair of the St. Francis School Multi-Purpose Facility, which will – in time – include a sports court for eventual home games, and an upgraded stage for the school’s fine arts program.

Granted the location has changed, the mission and the crusade continue.  All are welcomed to contribute to the crusade, as runners, as prize or monetary sponsors, or as prayers for our continued growth.
