‘Guam is Good’ 3rd Annual Cancer Symposium July 2

The Edward M. Calvo Cancer Foundation will host the 3rd annual “Guam is Good Cancer Symposium” from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday July 2, 2016 at the Westin Resort Guam Hotel.

The full day event will include education, information, inspiration, physical activity, encouragement and practical advice for cancer survivors, their caregivers, and loved ones who are learning to cope with the multiple effects of cancer diagnoses.

Dr. Rachel Taitano Leon Guerrero, Associate Dean of the College of Natural and Applied Sciences at the University of Guam will be the keynote speaker. Break-out sessions will include art therapy, dance movement, restorative yoga, photography, journaling, nutrition, and estate planning.

Dr. Leon Guerrero will share the importance of proper nutrition as it pertains to cancer.

Attorney Mickey Flynn will provide practical advice on estate planning. Taliea Guerrero Strohmeyer, a local artist and ColorGuam entrepreneur, will engage participants in art expression.

Clare Calvo, a veteran fitness instructor and owner of Synergy Wellness, will lead dance movement classes for participants to stay physically active.

Lewis Santos, a professional photographer with more than 20 years of experience, will conduct photography basics and help participants chronicle their journey.

Becky Toves will lead a journaling session that allows participants an opportunity to express their emotions on paper. She has been an English teacher for more than 25 years and has taught adults about the importance of journaling and improving lives through writing. Toves has also enjoyed scrapbooking as a hobby for the past 15 years and has volunteered many hours in sharing her love of paper crafting with others through mini-workshops.

Linda Frank has extensive training in integrative yoga and has led gentle yoga and relaxation sessions at conferences for cancer survivors, social workers, diabetes, hospital volunteers, palliative caregivers, and others. She will lead a seated yoga session.

Kat Barnett is an enthusiastic and motivated Yoga teacher with a committed passion for holistic health and wellness. She is a firm believer that Yoga is a tool that can be for all people regardless of their body type, age or flexibility. Her main emphasis is on breathing, alignment and mindfulness of the student’s individual experience. She will lead a restorative Yoga class.

Rosae Calvo, RDN, LD is a licensed dietician with Payless Supermarkets, Inc. She directs the Health Smart program, which aims “to build a healthier, happier community” through product guidance, Food education, and Fitness Promotion. She will be leading nutrition talks for maintaining health and well-being.

A “Beautyfeel” session, led by Judy Rosario will focus on feeling good both inside and out. Razielle Mergel is a certified yoga instructor with intensive training in different yoga practices including: Vinyasa, Hot Yoga, Kids and Family Yoga. She enjoys inspiring others to improve wellness and commit to long-term health and fitness goals. She will be conducting a family Yoga session for our youngest participants and their families, who may need help in their journey.

“Let’s Talk Cancer” will be a facilitated group discussion and forum for participants to share the ups and downs of dealing with cancer.

The event is being made possible through a grant from the Guam Cancer Trust Fund, established by Public Law 30-80, which comes from a redirection of 15 percent of all tobacco sales taxes generated within the Territory, and under the purview of UOG. As a grant recipient, the Edward M. Calvo Cancer Foundation uses the funds to directly provide support services for Guam cancer patients.

The event is free and open to interested cancer patients, survivors, caregivers, family members, and supporters. Registration is limited to the first 200 registrants. Participants must be at least 10 years of age. Register at the Edward M. Calvo Cancer Foundation Office in Hagatna (above Cup and Saucer cafe’).
