The Fellowship of Catholic University Students, or FOCUS, hosted a student leadership summit called SLS18 from Jan. 2 to Jan. 6 in the windy city of Chicago. FOCUS welcomed over 8,000 attendees which included hundreds of religious and priests.
SLS18 consisted of Mass, adoration, confession, impact, power and training sessions, entertainment and also offered many the opportunity to meet and listen to some of America’s well-known Catholic speakers and public figures.
Conference attendees were in shock when Jim Caviezel stepped on stage for a surprise talk. Known for playing Jesus in the world-renowned movie “The Passion of the Christ,” Caviezel was greeted with many cheers and applauds from a very astonished and happy audience.
Caviezel started his talk by saying how in order to be great, one must become little in the eyes of God. He said that this is the way of the saints and the holy. He shared about his experience filming The Passion of the Christ and all the suffering he endured.
He went on to give words of encouragement that focused on shamelessly expressing our faith in public and answering God’s call for us to give our entire selves to him through prayer, fasting, mediation on the holy Scriptures, and taking the holy sacraments seriously.
His talk ended with a call of action of holiness to all those present, “By God we must live and with the Holy Spirit as your shield and Christ as your sword, may you join St. Michael and all the angels in sending Lucifer and his henchmen straight right back to hell where they belong!”
Other speakers at the conference included the YouTube famous clergy Bishop Robert Barron and Father Mike Schmitz; philosopher Dr. Peter Kreeft, Jason Evert, Kevin Cotter, and more. Jim Caviezel’s talk and others can be found on FOCUS’ Facebook page.
FOCUS is a Catholic outreach based in the United States where missionaries live on college campuses across the nation to help students persevere towards a life with Christ.
