Sisters and Brothers: Jesus’ answer in today’s gospel is simple and direct. He points to the foundation on which all the other commandments hinge: LOVE.

The first part of the commandment which is to love God forms a portion of the “Shema” recited by devout Jews twice a day: “Hear, O Israel! The Lord is our God, the Lord alone! Therefore, you shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength.

The second part which is to love one’s neighbor is taken from the book of Leviticus: “Take no revenge and cherish no grudge against your fellow countrymen. You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” What is disconcerting about the second part is that it is “like the first”: loving your neighbor is like loving God. To love God above all things comes as no surprise to Jesus’ hearers.

But to put the love of neighbor on equal footing in importance and necessity is hard to accept. But here lies the real test of love. One who loves God does not have a one-on-one relationship with him. Rather, he is involved in a “love triangle.”

Jesus tells us that if we truly love God we have to love the “other one”: the neighbor.

St. John explains it thus: If anyone says, “I love God but hates his brother, he is a liar: for whoever does not love a brother whom he has seen cannot love God whom he has not seen.”

And when there is love, other virtues are not far behind: obedience, trust, service, patience. This is why the old man John tells the Christians: “If you do only this, it suffices.” St. Augustine echoes this in his famous phrase: “Love, and do everything else.”

This is not an invitation to licentiousness but a call to the commandment that gives color and meaning to all of our actions. For as the apostle Paul says: “If I have the gift of prophecy and comprehend all mysteries and all knowledge; if I have all faith so as to move mountains but do not have love, I am nothing.”

May your day be filled with love and may Almighty God bless you in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
