Seventeen priests ordained on Guam in nine years

The Catholic Church on Guam has been blessed with the ordination of 17 new priests in the past nine years following Saturday’s scheduled ordination of Deacon Luis Venancio Benavente Camacho Jr. and Deacon Michael Vincent Jucutan to the sacred priesthood.

His Excellency Archbishop Anthony Sablan Apuron, OFM Cap. D.D. was to ordain then-Dea- cons Luis and Michael during a 10 a.m. Mass at the Dulce Nombre de Maria Cathedral-Basilica in Hagatna, Nov. 9.

A native son of Guam, Fr. Luis, 28, becomes the first Chamorro priest ordained from the Redemptoris Mater Archdiocesan Seminary of Guam. He is also the second Chamorro to be or- dained a priest for the Archdiocese of Guam this year. Fr. Richard Meno Kidd, from Malesso, was ordained last July.

Fr. Michael, 36, from Hawaii, becomes the first seminarian from Hawaii to be ordained from the Redemptoris Mater Seminary. Following Fr. Richard’s ordination earlier this year, former Anglican priest Fr. Richard Ro- jas was ordained by Archbishop Anthony at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Inarajan on Aug. 17. A military chaplain stationed on Guam, Fr. Richard Rojas received permission to be ordained here but is not a priest assigned to Guam.

Thirteen priests of the archdiocese have re- ceived their formation at the Redemptoris Mater Seminary which was erected in 1999. In respec- tive order, they are Fr. Alberto Rodriguez Salamanca (Spain), Fr. Jason Granado (Philippines), Fr. Antonino Caminiti (Italy), Fr. Fabio Faiola (Italy), Fr. Aurelius Stoia (Austria), Fr. Edivaldo da Silva Oliveira (Brazil), Fr. Julio César Sánchez Malagón (Colombia), Fr. Miguel Angel Cervantes (Spain), Fr. Edwin Bushu (United States), Fr. Francesco Asproni (Italy), Fr. Krzysztof Szafarski (Poland), Fr. Luis Camacho (Guam) and Fr. Michael Jucutan (Hawaii).

The Redemptoris Mater Seminary has pro- duced new priests to serve on Guam each year in 2005, 2008, 2009, 2011, 2012 and 2013.

Fr. Andre Eduvala was ordained to the Capu- chin Franciscan order on August 14, 2004 at Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament Church, Agana Heights. Fr. Paul Gofigan of Santa Barbara parish was ordained June 12, 2004 at the Cathedral- Basilica.
