‘Let the one among you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone’

352

This gospel reflection is taken from the Society of St. Paul’s “366 Days with the Lord” book.

Brothers and Sisters: In today’s gospel, a woman caught in the very act of committing adultery, is brought before Jesus for judgment. The story gives rise to several questions. Why has the woman committed adultery when she knows that it is punishable by death? Where is her husband? Where is her lover? Could her husband have cynically manipulated everything so that she would be caught and tried for her sin?

If we give answers culled from life and the complexities of human relations, we will agree that Jesus has every right to challenge the Pharisees’ attempt to secure her condemnation. Is not her husband partly to blame for the instability of their union? Are the scribes and Pharisees and those with them not guilty of taking upon themselves the enforcement of the Law? Have they failed to consider that the woman could repent? Are they merely using her to entrap Jesus? Is not her lover equally guilty for having abandoned her to the mob after professing undying love?

That is why no one can face up to Jesus when he says: “Let the one among you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her.” His words strike them like a sharp sword, opening their hearts, and revealing their evil desire and hypocrisy hidden there.

Jesus, who is without sin, can render judgment but he chooses to let her go free. He does not make light of the serious sin of adultery. He forgives the woman not because her sin is harmless but because he loves even sinners like her. He gives her another life, opens before her another horizon. After experiencing the mercy of God, would she still go back to her former life?

This gospel reflection is taken from St. Paul’s 366 Days with the Lord. May your day be filled with love and may Almighty God bless you in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
