Sister Mary Angelica Perez, formerly known as Remedios Celina Leon Guerrero Perez, daughter of Juan and Reme
ios Perez of Hagåtña, passed away peacefully at Mercy Care Center, Oka, Tamuning, Guam on Mar. 21, 2019 at the age of 89 years old.
She is survived by her brother, Tommy Perez and family, many relatives and friends, and the Sisters of Mercy. She entered the Sisters of Mercy Community in Belmont, North Carolina, on Aug. 15, 1948, around the same time the second group of Guam Sisters of Mercy entered here on Guam.
While in North Carolina, Sister Angelica taught in Salisbury, Belmont, Wilmington, and Raleigh. She completed her bachelor’s degree in American History with a minor in Music at Mercyhurst College in Pennsylvania before returning to Guam.
Sister taught at various Catholic schools here on Guam, including the Cathedral Grade School, the Academy of Our Lady of Guam, Santa Barbara Catholic School, and St. Anthony Catholic School. She also served as an administrator at Infant of Prague Nursery in Tai, taught CCD and served as sodality moderator in many parishes.
Besides education ministry, Sister Angelica utilized her musical talent by teaching piano lessons to many students in Guam during her early years of religious life.
Sister Angelica was one of the first sisters to reside at the Mercy retirement home, Mercy Care Center, in Oka, Tamuning. She resided there with other elder and infirmed sisters. The novena of Masses and rosary began on Mar. 21 and will end on Mar. 29. Funeral services will be held at Dulce Nombre de Maria Cathedral-Basilica on Saturday, Apr. 6, 2019 at 12 noon followed by interment at Pigo Cemetery in Anigua. May Sister Angelica rest in eternal peace!
